Architecture

• Very cellular smears
• Single cells, sheets or clusters
• High grade adenocarcinoma-like features

Cellular features

• Large polygonal cells
• Often singly dispersed
• Scant to abundant cytoplasm
• May have vacuolated or granular cytoplasm
• Intracytoplasmic mucin usually absent

Nuclear features

• Nuclei enlarged, round to oval
• Coarse chromatin
• Prominent nucleoli

Background

• Necrosis present
• Frequent mitosis

Ancillary studies

• Express cytokeratin, CK7, EMA, Androgen receptor, CK20+/- , GCDFP-15 +/- , may express S100, vimentin, CD117, PSA, calponin
