Pap stain: Medium power
Isolated cells with high N:C ratio in a background of normal superficial and intermediate cells
Pap stain: Medium power
Keratinizing cells with anisokaryosis, bizarre shapes (elongated, spindled), hyperchromatic nuclei and abundant keratinized cytoplasm. Note background HSIL cells with high N:C ratios
Pap stain: High power
HSIL cells with high N:C ratio, hyperchromatic irregular nuclei in a background of normal superficial and intermediate cells
Pap stain: Medium power
Keratinizing cells with anisokaryosis, bizarre shapes (elongated, spindled), hyperchromatic nuclei and abundant keratinized cytoplasm. Note background HSIL cells with high N:C ratios
Pap stain: High power
HSIL cells with high N:C ratio, hyperchromatic irregular nuclei. Note decreased amount of cytoplasm resulting in high N:C ratios
Pap stain: Medium power
Keratinizing cells with anisokaryosis, bizarre shapes (elongated, spindled), hyperchromatic nuclei and abundant keratinized cytoplasm. Note background HSIL cells with high N:C ratios
Pap stain: High power
HSIL cells with high N:C ratio, hyperchromatic irregular nuclei, granular chromatin and lack of nucleoli
Pap stain: Medium power
HSIL cells with high N:C ratio
Flattening of cells at the periphery (palisading with pseudostratification) and presence of nucleoli may suggest involvement of gland space.
Pap stain: High power
Small group of HSIL cells with varying nuclear size
Pap stain: Medium power
HSIL cells with high N:C ratios
Pleomorphic HSIL cells without necrosis/ diathesis or necrosis/ diathesis present without malignant cells are features suggestive of invasion.
Pap stain: High power
Group of HSIL cells
Note high N:C ratios, hyperchromatic irregular nuclei and lack of nucleoli. Note variation in nuclear sizes
Pap stain: High power
Pleomorphic bizarre cells with keratinization in a background of HSIL, suggestive of invasion
Pleomorphic HSIL cells without necrosis/ diathesis or necrosis/ diathesis present without malignant cells are features suspicious for invasion
Pap stain: High power
HSIL cells with high N:C ratio, hyperchromatic irregular nuclei in a background of normal superficial and intermediate cells
Features
• Liquid based
• Cells involved are smaller and less mature than cells in LSIL
• Cell size varies
• May be present singly, in sheets or syncitial aggregates
• Typically less cytoplasm
• Cytoplasm immature and delicate to mature and dense
• Nuclear enlargement similar to LSIL cells
• N:C ratio high due to less cytoplasm
• Hyperchromasia
• Irregular nuclear membranes with grooves and indentations
• Fine/coarsely granular chromatin
• Nucleoli typically absent (except when invasion into glands)
• Typically LSIL seen in background
