Medium power: DQ stain
Loosely cohesive single cells in a bloody background. Small nucleoli can be visualized within many of the monotonous nuclei
Medium power: Pap stain
Dispersed and aggregated (upper left) single and multinucleated cells
High Power: Pap stain
Single nucleated cells in a dispersed pattern. Occasional nuclear grooves and nucleoli can be visualized. Note the chondroid background, which stains green on this Pap preparation.
Medium Power: Cell block
Scattered multinucleated cells are dispersed among a predominantly unicellular population. In areas, a vague, chicken-wire type vascular pattern can be observed.
Features
• Typically cellular (depends on specimen procurement)
• Singly dispersed cells
• Single cells can predominate and form loosely cohesive cell clusters
• Characteristic chicken-wire vasculature may be seen surrounding mononuclear cells in small tissue fragments
• Can be associated with an aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) component
• Single and multinucleated giant cells
• Nuclear grooves present
• Rare inclusions can be observed
• Scant to bloody (especially if associated with ABC component), to chondroid
• Chondroid material stains magenta on DQ and green-violet on Pap
