• Urothelial cells (deep and superficial)
• Voided urine usually single cells
• Papillary clusters in instrumentation, calculi, infection or low grade urothelial lesions

Cellular features

• Small cells (10um) to large superficial (umbrella) cells (100um)
• Round to triangular to polyhedral cells
• Cytoplasm can be granular to dense to vacuolated

Nuclear features

• Round and small nuclei
• May be binucleated
• Superficial cells can be multinucleated
• Bland chromatin

Background

• Usually clean
• May have contaminating squamous cells (genital tract)
• May have blood
• Crystals
• Casts
• Inflammation
• Multinucleated giant cells (e.g. BCG therapy)
